Statement by Congressman Gary Miller on President Obama’s Gun Control Proposals

Rancho Cucamonga, Jan 17, 2013 -

Congressman Gary G. Miller issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s recent issuance of executive actions and proposals to Congress on gun control:

“First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers remain with the families and loved ones of those killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School. As our nation continues to grieve for the lives lost on that terrible December day, I believe it is important that we have a thorough and thoughtful discussion on steps we can take to reduce violence in our society.

Keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals and those with mental illnesses that pose a threat to themselves and the public is vital. I agree with President Obama that current laws on the books should be strongly enforced and flaws in our mental health system must be addressed. However, infringing on our fundamental and constitutional rights is not the correct solution.

The fact is proposals to limit guns rights only provide the illusion of reducing gun violence. Whether there is a gun ban or not, those who are committed to doing harm will find ways to do so – such as the perpetrator of the Newtown shootings, who stole firearms that were legally obtained by his mother.

As Congress considers ways to address the root cause of violent crime and prevent future tragedies, I will work closely with members of both parties to find solutions that will protect our families, schools and neighborhoods without eroding our constitutional liberties. Keeping our children safe is our nation’s highest priority.”
